Funding Opportunities

Each NIH institute is unique and may potentially only participate in one of the three NIH cycle deadlines:
  • January 25, May 25 and/or September 25.
  • AIDS-related applications follow unique application due dates: January 7, May 7 and/or September 7.
  • When submitting a 5-year renewal be cognizant of the earliest projected start date to avoid a break in funding.
Important Due Date Information:
  • Check the funding opportunity announcement (FOA) for due date information - Application due date supersedes the information on this site. Read your application carefully to determine the due date.
  • If the FOA says "standard dates apply", refer to the dates above.
  • Note that renewal/resubmission/revision applications may have different due dates than new applications. Read the application carefully.
The NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts is the official publication for NIH medical and behavioral research grant policies, guidelines and funding opportunities.
Application Definitions:
  • New Application - Seeks support for a previously unfunded program (or a previously funded program that has been substantially restructured after unsuccessful attempts at Renewal).
  • Renewal Application - Seeks support for a current or recent previously funded program.
  • Revision Application - Seeks additional support for a currently funded program.
  • Resubmission Application (Amended Application) - Amended version of a previously submitted application for any of a New, Renewal, or Revision application.
