Abstract/Summary

  • No more than 30 lines of text.
  • State the application's broad, long-term objectives and specific aims, making reference to the health relatedness of the project (i.e., relevance to the mission of the agency). 
  • Describe the research design and methods for achieving the stated goals. 
    • Include the objectives, rationale and design of the research training program, as well as key activities in the training plan.
    • Be sure that the project summary reflects the key focus of the proposed project so that the application can be appropriately categorized.
  • Include a brief description of:
    • Trainee levels (i.e., undergraduate, predoc, postdoc, faculty).
    • Intended trainee outcomes.
    • Duration of the proposed training appointments.
    • Projected number of participating trainees.
  • Remember, it’s not the same as the research strategy.
  • Keep it concise and succinct.
  • Should be able to stand on its own (separate from the application).
  • Use layman’s terms.
  • Avoid descriptions of past accomplishments and the use of the first person.
  • Do not include proprietary, confidential information or trade secrets in the project summary.
  • If the application is funded, the project summary will be entered into an NIH database and made
    available on the NIH RePORT and will become public information.

Narrative

  • No more than 3 sentences only.
  • Describe relevance of this research to public health.
  • Use layman’s terms.
    • NIH applicants can explain how the research will contribute to knowledge of living systems and/or improve health, extend life, and reduce illness and disability.
  • If the application is funded, this public health relevance statement will be combined with the project summary (above) and will become public information.

  • The “Bibliography & References Cited” attachment is required unless otherwise noted in the FOA
    • If no references, include attachment with N/A.
  • Do not include lists of publications of project directors, mentors or trainees in this section, as this information will be included in the Biosketches and Data Tables.

  • This attachment should be used only to cite references supporting the need, rationale, and approach for the training program.  Do not include lists of publications of project directors, mentors or trainees in this section.

Public Access Policy

Facilities and Resources

  • Use of URLs and hyperlinks in this section is not allowed unless specified in the FOA.
  • Describe how the scientific environment in which the research will be done contributes to the probability of success:
    • Institutional support
    • Physical resources
    • Intellectual rapport
  • Describe how the proposed studies will benefit from unique aspects of the scientific environment, subject populations, or collaborative arrangements.
  • If there are multiple performance sites, describe the resources available at each site.
  • Describe the facilities and resources that will be used in the proposed training program, including any foreign performance sites.  Indicate how the applicant organization will support the program, financial or otherwise. 
    • This could also include, for example:
      • Supplementation of stipends
      • Shared laboratory facilities and equipment
      • Funds for curriculum development
      • Support for student activities
      • Release time for the PD/PI and participating faculty
      • Support for additional trainees in the program
      • Creative ways to improve the environment for the establishment and growth of the research training program.

Other Attachments: Advisory Committee

  • Although not a required component of a training program.
  • If an Advisory Committee is intended, provide a plan for the appointment of an Advisory Committee to monitor progress of the training [career development] program.
  • The composition, roles, responsibilities, and desired expertise of committee members, frequency of committee meetings, and other relevant information should be included.
  • Describe how the Advisory Committee will evaluate the overall effectiveness of the program.
  • Proposed Advisory Committee members should be named in the application if they have been invited to participate at the time the application is submitted.
  • Renewal applications with Advisory Committees should include the names of all committee members during the past project period.
  • Name your file “Advisory_Committee.pdf”.
    • The filename provided for each “Other Attachment” will be the name used for the bookmark in the electronic application in eRA Commons.
