Multiple PI Leadership Plan (MPI)

  • If grant application has multiple PI's desginated, it must include a MPI Leadership Plan.
  • Do not submit a leadership plan if you are not submitting a MPI application.
The participation of multiple PDs/PIs (MPI) is encouraged, particularly when each brings a unique perspective and skill set that will enhance training.  The emphasis in a training grant's MPI Leadership Plan should be on how MPIs will benefit the program and the trainees.
  • A single PD/PI must be designated as Contact PD/PI for the purpose of communicating with the NIH, although other individuals may contact the NIH on behalf of the Contact PD/PI when necessary.
  • Training programs are intended to be coherent, NIH will not allocate the budget or training positions between multiple PD/PIs.  A single award will be made.
  • MPI plans should include reasonable numbers of PD/PIs and each should be included for a specific and clearly stated purpose.
  • Describe complementary expertise of the PDs/PIs.
A rationale for choosing a MPI approach should be described:
  • Describe the leadership team's governance, organizational structure, communication plans, decision-making processes, and conflict resolution procedures.
  • The roles and administrative, technical, and other responsibilities for the training program should be delineated for the PD/PIs and other collaborators.
