Letters of Support

Check the FOA to determine whether any additional program-specific letters of support are required.  In general, other letters are not required by NIH unless they are needed to document a specific commitment that is essential to the proposed training program.

The required 10-page Institutional Letter of Support may be combined with other Letters of Support into a single PDF attachment.

Guidance:
  • Letters are not required from individual participating faculty mentors
  • Consultants, if applicable.
    • Letters should include rate/charge for consulting services and confirm their role(s) in the project.
  • Consortium partner(s)
  • Letters from an internal or external advisory committee members.  Typical letters simply confirm that the individual agrees to serve and briefly describes their role, for example:
    • Participating in annual program reviews
    • Evaluating trainee progress
    • Advising on program improvements
    • Providing an external perspective on the training program.
    • These are commitment letters, not recommendation letters.
    • Individual letters from Advisory Committee members are not required

Important Notes:

  • Combine all Letters of Support into a single PDF file, with the institutional 10 page letter first.
  • Use of hyperlinks and URLs is not allowed unless specified in the NOFO
  • Do not place these letters in the appendix
