Progress Report (Renewals Only)

A Progress Report attachment is required for renewal applications.  Follow the page limits provided below unless otherwise specified in the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA).
Organize the Progress Report using the required section headings:
  • Program Overview – 5-page limit
    • Provide an overview of accomplishments and progress achieved since the last competitive review.
  • Progress of Those Appointed to the Grant – 1 page per appointee/ trainee
    • Provide a summary for each trainee appointed to the training grant since the last competitive review.
Writing Guidance:

Overview
  • Major accomplishments of the training program.
  • Progress toward meeting program goals and objectives.
  • Activities and opportunities that are specific to the training program.
  • How Training Related Expenses (TRE) funds were used to benefit trainees and the program.
  • Workshops, seminars, and training activities sponsored by the program.  For each activity, include:
    • Title
    • Speaker(s)
    • Relevance to the program theme
    • Relevance to training objectives
  • Indicate whether the program uses Individual Development Plans (IDPs). If IDPs are used, describe:
    • How IDPs were implemented during the reporting period.
    • How IDPs were used to support trainee training and career development.
    • How mentors and trainees utilize the IDP process.
    • Do not include actual IDPs or blank IDP templates.
    • Reference information included elsewhere in the application, such as the Program Plan and Data Tables, but do not repeat that information in the Progress Report.
Progress of Those Appointed to the Grant
  • 1 Page limit per appointee/trainee
  • Provide a summary for each trainee appointed to the training grant since the last competitive review. Include the following information, as applicable:
    • Degree(s) being pursued or already obtained
    • Mentor(s)
    • Description of the trainee's research project
    • Progress made during the reporting period
    • Relevant coursework
    • Conference presentations
    • Publications resulting from training grant-supported research
    • Honors, fellowships, and other support
    • Workshops attended
    • Career development activities
    • For publications resulting from research conducted while supported by the training grant, describe the trainee's role in the work, such as:
      • Designing experiments
      • Conducting experiments
      • Analyzing data
      • Drafting manuscripts
      • Other significant scientific contributions
Important Notes:

The following materials should not be included in the Progress Report, Appendix, or elsewhere in the application unless specifically requested in the FOA.
  • Biosketches of current or former trainees/scholars.
  • Sensitive personally identifiable information (PII).
  • Photographs of trainees.
  • Individual demographic information.
  • Actual IDPs or blank IDP forms.
  • Workshop or seminar promotional materials.
    • Flyers
    • Agendas
    • Announcements
  • Course syllabi.
  • Program brochures.
  • Applications containing prohibited materials may be withdrawn and not reviewed
  • A My Bibliography report of publications arising from work conducted by trainees while supported by the training grant is not required at the time of submission, but will be requested as Just-in-time (JIT) information prior to award.
