Multiple PI Leadership Plan (MPI)

The participation of multiple PDs/PIs (MPI) is encouraged, particularly when each brings a unique perspective and skill set that enhances training. The emphasis of the MPI Leadership Plan should be on how the multiple-PD/PI structure strengthens the training program and benefits trainees.

Include:

  • A rationale for the multiple-PD/PI approach.
  • The complementary expertise and unique contributions of each PD/PI.
  • The leadership team's governance and organizational structure.
  • Communication plans, decision-making processes, and conflict resolution procedures.
  • Clearly defined administrative, scientific, training, and other program responsibilities for each PD/PI and key collaborators.
  • Distribution of resources, if applicable.

Writing Guidance:

  • Focus on why a multiple-PD/PI model is needed and how it enhances the training environment.
  • Clearly describe the complementary expertise of the PDs/PIs and how the leadership team will work together to provide effective oversight of the program.
  • Explain how decisions will be made, how communication will occur, and how conflicts will be resolved.
  • The plan should demonstrate how the MPI structure benefits both the program and its trainees.

Important Notes:

  • A single PD/PI must be designated as the Contact PD/PI for communications with NIH; this role does not confer additional authority within the leadership team.
  • Each PD/PI should have a clearly defined role and appropriate expertise.
  • Institutional training grants are intended to support a coherent, integrated training program through a single award.
  • The MPI approach should be well justified and demonstrate added value beyond a single-PD/PI model.
